It was inevitable. It's unfortunate, but predictable. The media have reported comparisons of the current horrid situation in the Indian Ocean to that of the World Trade Center bombing attacks of September 11, 2001.
Let's be clear. Both are horrible. Unfortunately, both are a fact. However, that's pretty much where the similarities stop.
By no means are the lives of one tradgedy more or less valued than the other, but the sheer number of casualties that they are experiencing in the Indian Ocean area, is already estimated at over 100,000 lives. That's a factor of around 33 times (and growing) the number that died on 9.11. A few months from now, they'll be able to count today's diseased and starving among those numbers. It will be staggering; the likes of which we've not seen in many, many years.
Second, as horrible as the Indian Ocean event is, it truly was an accident. The 9.11 attacks were premeditated. 'Nuff said.
In my opinion, both go down in history as two of the worst catastrophes ever. But they're so different. One makes me very angry. The other makes me very sad.
Later.
